Match Reports
Chiltern League Cross Country - Rnd 5 Wing
11th Feb 2012
What a great day .
-9C on our way but a perfect day weather wise when we arrived at Wing! There was warmth in the sun and a view to die for. However, numbers were down due to a combination of half term holidays, illness, injury and weather conditions which I can not blame anyone for!!
The under 11's were out in numbers both female and male telling us something about their determination and they were well rewarded with a tremendous 3rd place position for the girls which was especially impressive as the under 11's are ran as a mob match and not ran in divisions. We also had 5 who had run in all 5 races; Callum, Elizabeth, Emma, Megan and Freya. The under
13's St Albans AC girls were both strong in numbers and also in quality but because of fierce competition from Bracknell in the shape of Grace and Hope Goddard we missed out on team gold but still came away with silver medals. Eleanor, Caitlin, Sinead and Lizzie ran in all 5 races, Tabitha and Jess E only missed 1 when they had to do a school competition. In the boys Adam Wilmshurst came away with individual bronze and also the team Gold medals. We also had Ricardo and Ben who competed in all 5 fixtures.
The under 15 girls achieved a team Gold and 3 of the team competing in all 5 fixtures; Laura E, Lauren and Naomi what fantastic commitment. In the boys the club can celebrate James Down silver medal and team bronze. The under 17 saw 2 individual successes with Abby Smith getting bronze and James getting gold as well as the teams both getting bronze.
The Striders also did well with the veteran men getting team Bronze amongst others were Ian, Colin, Grant, David and Adrian all dads of the younger athletes and the ladies getting both senior and veteran gold.

Next Cross country for those of you that have entered is the National Cross country

2012 Hertfordshire Schools Cross Country Champs
4th Feb 2012
With over 40 of the club's members taking part in this event it was certainly one of the main events in our cross country calender. 9 races took place last Saturday in Verulanium Park it was great to see all the efforts of the Hertfordshire schools athletic association ,as once again they organised a brilliant mornings activities. These races are significant in the season for the young athletes as selection is up for grabs to be part of the English Schools Cross Country Championships. First race was the senior boys and with a tough 7.5km race which included 4 climbs of Bluehouse Hill . James McMurray demonstrated the importance of mental self belief as he powered up the 4th accent to claim first place ahead of Ed Shepherd who himself is running for England this coming weekend. Chris Hilton of Palmiters school had a good race especially as this is only his second cross country race of the season, as did the ever consistent Oliver Poulain of Verulam. The senior and intermediate girls race was ran simultaneously over 4.5km the club was delighted to have 2 girls qualify in the senior race Megan Steer 2nd and Hannah Hull in 5th along with Abbie Smith in the junior race in 4th. In the intermediate boys race competition is always very tough with a strong St Albans boys schools team and some very talented Herts Phoenix athletes but we fielded 3 good runners all a year young. The junior girls race had our largest representation with around 14 young runners 2 of whom made it into the top 6 to get automatic selection to the champs Tabitha Weddell 4th and Georgia Robin 5th both from Stags. Lauren Eckley is on the reserve list in 7th place. We watched how again Ben Clarke used his well used tactic of slowly ticking off his competition as he eased his way past all his school mates many a year older to take selection in 7th place. The pre junior races are for the year 7's and qualification is still a year off for this age group Eleanor Hobbs took a convincing win and Caitlin Eckley came in in 2nd place. In the boys race Ricardo James had a great sprint finish to come home in second. The day was brought ot a finish with the primary schools race and the club could see many new talented young athletes in the making all you have to do is keep them in the sport which is sometimes easier said than done!!

2012 South of England Cross country Championships
28th Jan 2012
I can honestly say I wasn't especially looking forward to the journey down to Brighton to be met with these potential parking problems but it ended up to be one of the nicest cross country days I've had. We arrived to find a parking space in Stanmer Park near to the start, the park was gorgeous and it was a lovely sunny day. What more could we ask for.
The courses were all on the more challenging end of Cross country races especially when you went up the age groups with my race being ran up a mountain!!
James Down had another solid run as our only under 15 boy representative then it was the under 13 girls of whom we had 7 . It is a great example of strength in numbers as all 7 were within 30 secs of each other and we managed to finish 9th team in their age category which I think is one of our best team results. Well done girls.
We had great runs by our under 13 boys and they all seemed to enjoy the long steep decent to the finsh unfortunately we were one short of a team. The under 15 girls had an interesting race with quite a lot of pushing leading to one of our runners ending up in minor injurys with a badly spiked arm. James and Oli were our 2 under 17 men in an especially hard race with the number of hills increasing and some excellent competition. James was our highest finisher in 8th place which was great at this stage of the season. Megan and Hannah ran well in the under 17 women but it was evident that there is a bib drop out rate amongst the older teen years, as this was an especially small field and makes us even more proud of you all who come back for more of such a hard sport.
St Albans Striders Women had a great race and finished in 4th position missing out of 3rd place by 2 points.
Wasn't it a great feeling flying down that hill!! And what fantastic spectators you all are!!
Brighton sea front was a lovely way to end the day
Well done all and looking forward to the Schools,Wing and the nationals.

Chiltern League Cross Country - Rnd 4 Slough
14th Jan 2012

Who gets stressed before a race ? Not the under 17's
With clear blue skies and very low temperatures neally 40 young athletes and a good turnout amongst parents without mentioning any names ran over firm grassland without the traditional flood at the beginning of the home straight.
With a strong field of under 11 girls it will be down to the last fixture on 11 th feb whether we manage to stay in 3rd postition and recieve a bronze medal for the under 11 girls. This is a massive achievement . The under 11 boys were down to 1 runner which I'm afraid is due to all the other sports boys get involved in but keep going Callum you are doing brilliantly as is your mum!! Again we have such dedication amongst our under 13's and this was demonstrated by the excellent results even though Bracknell have some awesome female athletes. All results can be seen on www.chilternccl.co.uk
Congrats to our debutant Laurissa James.

8th Jan 2012 - 2012 Herts Cross Country Champs
Cross country is alive and well in St Albans when several teams young and old travelled to Fairlands Valley Park, Stevenage to take part in the annual County Cross Country Championships. In ideal weather conditions the courses were various configurations of dry woodland, heavy grassland and undulations which were quite testing towards the ends of the laps. Wonderful support from the many friends and relatives around the course was a welcome relief from the hard work which makes cross country so rewarding when you reach the finish line!
Races were commenced at 11am with the under 11 girls race. These are girls in school years 5 and 6 and the determination on all of their faces most be credited as they powered up towards the finishing straight. The girls ended up with team Silver and Bronze special mention to Jess Laitner, Megan Mitchell, Freya Weddell, Emily Anders and Emily Barnes on their top ten finishes. Not to be out done the boys showed similar determination and again won team bronze. Jed Lumb in his début run for the club was a creditable 4th.
The under 13 age group was perhaps our most successful for a club in that both the boys and girls took home the county cups with the girls also running away with bronze and fielding an astonishing 5 teams. In this Olympic year it would be great to see such female uptake for sport throughout the age groups. Tabitha Weddell continues her excellent form taking individual bronze with Alex Bentley at her heels in 4th and Eleanor Hobbs in 6th. It is important to realise in cross country team races every runner counts and this really helps with the motivation. Adam Wilmshurst had a very strong finish to come home in 4th with Ricardo James having a great race in 7th.
The under 15 boys were unfortunately short of a team but James Down and Sam Jones both had great races in 8th and 10th respectively. The girls went home with team silver Abigail West and Pippa Bailey coming home in 8th and 9th.
The under 17 men’s race was run with the under 17 women’s over 5800m and was especially exciting as 3 of the best national cross country runners were head to head. The first lap was run very much as a pack before the final battle of mental and physical strength was won by James McMurray as he powered down the home straight. This gave St Albans AC their one individual gold. Abby Smith had a superb run in the under 17 women coming home in 4th place followed by Megan Steer and Hannah Hull to take team silver .
Next fixture for the club is the Chiltern cross country league next Saturday in Windsor

Chiltern Cross Country December 3rd St Albans
Many thanks to all of you who helped to make this a very successful day yesterday. The marshalling was incredible and made such a difference to all the runners so well done!!
Also some great performances to all our 47 runners especially our debutants
Annie Montgomery,Miranda Wilkins,Jack Simpson and Thomas Patrick. What a challenging course for you to start Cross Country running on the mud on that hill was awesome if thats the right word!!
It was also great for our young athletes to be so supportive of our adults in the striders who also had a phenomenal race.
Looking through our results it was great to have Fraser in the under 20 age group, a really strong under 13 boys and girls squad, as well as excellent results in the under 11 age groups who run as a mob match.
Two more fixtures in Jan and feb so check out the fixture list for dates and put them in your diary.

12th Nov - Chiltern Cross country Watford
Well done all 42 of you on superb runs today in Watford. What a great way to start the day with some excellent runs from our under 11 girls. As most of you are aware we compete in the mob match at this age group and all 9 of you were instrumental in our 3rd position. A little thin on the ground for the under 11 boys but well done to Callum and Liam. Cassiobury park offers some great courses running in grassland and muddy woodland but it is a ideal course for beginners as although the last 800 can be challenging there are large parts of easier running. We had 18 under 13 runners which was a great turnout . Phenomenal runs actually by all of you and we did have some debutants! This was displayed by our team results as the boys are in 1st place and the girls 2nd. Unfortunately Bracknell have been demoted to our division which means the girls competition is very hard. The older age groups were a little thin due to the English Schools cup competition and a couple of other competitions but nevertheless we are in a convincing 1st position in the young athletes league. 5th Nov 2011 - English National Cross Country Relays
On Saturday 5th November we were lucky enough to have 10 teams representing St Albans AC at this national championships as well as a team of dads and a mum representing St Albans Striders . In short we had teams in all but 2 of the age groups!!
Well done all on that achievement.
The national relays gives all abilities chance to compete against the very best in the country and is great fun with each leg in the team running 2,2.5,3 or 5km depending on the age group. The course is not too daunting and although undulating all the hills are short , there is a great part through the woods with loads of spectators cheering you on.
The only down side was for the first time in the 3 years we have competed it rained and rained. The coach driver was very hospitable !!
Results were excellent especially :-
James Mcmurray running the fastest leg in the under 17's with a great sprint finish up the challenging up hill finish.
Under 15 boys team who finished our highest team in 16 place out of 80 with Jack Gentle just missing out on a top 10 finish.

One of the highlights of the year for the middle distance squad and the day that marks the end of the track and beginning of the cross country season. Our 4th year of taking part and perhaps our biggest team with 4 under 13 girls,3 under 15 girls,1 under 17 as well as a team in each of the boys age groups. As usual we were blessed with a beautiful September day and the atmosphere at the Rushmoor arena second to none. This competition has all the benefits that come from excellent standards of competition for the most elite of our squad with the best runners from over the south of England but also is not intimidating for our novice under 13 teams. It also develops an excellent team camaraderie which we all benefit from in the depths of winter at the hardest cross country venues.
We were very lucky this year to be joined by three Herts Phoenix athletes as second claim athletes and meant we were able to field some very strong teams. Some of the other clubs from the south have large catchment areas which we do not benefit from. Thanks to Jamie and Liam Dee and also to Nick Doyle.
Special mention to Jamie Dee 3rd under 15 boy, Jack Gentle 5th ,James McMurray 5th under 17.Liam Dee 6th under 17
Teams- Under 15 Jamie,Sam,James Down,Jack 5th team although didn't qualify for championship
Under 17-Liam,Nick,Josh Eckley and James 9th team again not in championship.
Man of the match Josh Eckley for stepping into the under 17 team at short notice
Lady of the match-Alice Mulcahy for her excellent endurance training!!
