We all (all 40 of us) boarded the coach at Westminster Lodge early Sunday morning; loaded up our tents, our waterproofs and the rest of our kit before heading up the A1 to Peterborough where we pitched up our huge “St Albans AC” base and made our presence felt, with a respectable overall performance on the day.
The timing of this match was not ideal, with many Year 11s facing important GCSE exams as well as other school years having to consider important school exams at this time. Nonetheless we pulled through on the day after a challenging start to claw our way up from 5th (after the first hour or so) up to an eventual 3rd team place by the end of an enjoyable, albeit slightly wet at times, match.
Especially encouraging were our U13 girls team, who were well represented with cheer and enthusiasm in abundance. This impressive turn out from our younger girls, meant we had no trouble at all in covering all their events, from the throws, to the jumps, the prints through to ALL the middle distance races in their age category – all were covered and represented well.
Our U15 girls’ side saw quite a few new faces on the day, which we are always delighted to see – remember you are all welcome to join us at these team matches regardless of individual ability levels. Just let me (Chris James) know you have an interest and I will let you know more about how these matches work.
4 or 5 accompanying parents got involved with helping us on the officiating side of things which was hugely helpful, as without volunteer officials helping out on the day, these matches could not take place – so thank you again for your help on the day, which ranged from raking long jump pit and collecting javelins and discus, to judging track events - you all know who you are and thank you again from the club.
As always, Timmy Higman’s experience with these matches and tireless efforts before, during, and after the actual matches, are invaluable to me as the team manager – thank you Tim.
Finally, do remember that after our 5 matches are completed in August, all the points will be totted up and the top 12 clubs (out of 30 clubs taking part overall) get to compete in the finals – we scrapped through to the finals last year, let’s make sure we get there again this year.
Our next match is Sunday 15th June at Jarman Park, Hemel Hempstead – more details to follow 2 weeks ahead of the date.
