Many congratulations to the St. Albans Club representatives who won awards at this evening's Sports Awards presentation. Approximately 500 people attended the ceremony and there were numerous nominations for the 12 categories in the awards. The Community Coach of the Year was won by our very own David Hobbs and Recognition Awards were won by James McMurray in the Under 21 Elite Performer of the Year and by Rowan Seglah in the Under 21 Volunteer of the Year. It was truly astonishing to hear how many of the nominees (who came from some of the 250 sports clubs in the St. Albans District) have achieved National status, are National champions and indeed how many of them have represented Great Britain in their sports.

We were privileged to hear talks by two speakers - Alison Mowbray, an Olympic Medallist who was on the British Rowing Team which won silver at the Athens
Olympics and Emma Wiggs who is Captain of the GB Sitting Volleyball team and who will be representing her country at the 2012 Paralympic Games. The stories of
their incredible journeys to reach their goals were inspirational, motivational and at times quite emotional...and they were both so down to earth and
unassuming and indeed "normal" that I'm sure that all of those present learned a great lesson in how to achieve goals without all the hype and "superstardom" which unfortunately many sportsmen and women think is theirs by right. They were truly amazing ambassadors for their sports and it was an honour to be in their company.
